Understanding Utility Interconnection Queues
The grid's least visible administrative process determines which projects can connect, what they must pay, and how long construction must wait.
01What the queue actually is
A generator (and increasingly a very large load) cannot simply connect to the grid. The operator must first study how the project would affect reliability, equipment, and other users. The line of pending requests is the interconnection queue.

04Reform, and its limits
Regulators have introduced cluster studies, readiness requirements, and penalties intended to clear speculative requests and study projects in groups. The process is changing, but many backlogs are still measured in years because procedural reform cannot substitute for transmission construction.
